Hello, I’m Capt. Mike, owner and proprietor of Great Dayne Charters. I am one of the youngest charter captains in Ludington. Don’t let that scare you; I have over 20 years of experience on the lakes, rivers and streams in Michigan. I started out small just like so many people do, catching panfish on an old Zebco. As I grew up, I started targeting more bass, pike, and trout.
Once I entered college, I made friends with people that would only encourage my sickness. Fishing for the fish I grew up on was fine, but I wanted something different. I learned how to fly fish. Additionally, I learned how expensive flies could be so I took up fly tying. I started fishing for smallmouth bass in the rivers, and fly fishing for steelhead and salmon in the Manistee, Muskegon and Platte river systems.
Fishing Lake Michigan for anything from lake trout, to perch, to salmon, I cut my teeth on the latter half of my college career. I fell in love with salmon and trout. Nothing I have found comes close to the power and spontaneous explosion or energy that these fish create. To me, a steelhead cartwheeling on the surface is more exciting than seeing a sailfish in the saltwater. The sheer power of a salmon that can burn off 700 ft. of line in a single run just amazed me. Salmon are just plain crazy and unpredictable. Sometimes they jump like a steelhead or dog down with raw power. That is how I got here today. My first love is still loyal to steelhead, but nothing can compare to the randomness of a large king salmon.
